Club Roscoe is proud to announce the addition of Little Bucky and his screamin’ guitar blog. Cookin’ With Roscoe is dedicated to the interests of Guys Who Like To Cook, but we’re not bound by the stove or the grill or the smoker. Club Roscoe members cook everywhere they go, and in everything they do, so if you’re into music, especially guitars, Little Bucky is the man to check out. He’ll tell you stuff about guitars that you didn’t know existed (maybe didn’t need to know, but knowledge is power, right?). He’s been a guitar aficionado all his life. He plays, and he’s got an awesome guitar collection, locked in a humidified vault under the city (kind of like Batman and his Bat Cave). He’s promised to share his knowledge and expertise with us, so if you’ve got any questions, feel free to ask. If you look hard enough (we try not to), Little Bucky looks a little like Bob Seger. He might actually be Bob Seger. Where does Roscoe find these guys? It doesn’t matter, Little Bucky knows what he’s talking about.
Guitar Stuff

So,lately you’ve been considering learning to play the electric guitar. Good for you! Now all you have to do is pick out your “axe” of choice. I’ve had a lot of people ask me what they should look for in a first guitar, and most of them, wisely, decided not to spend too much money just in case things (like actually learning to play) didn’t work out so well.
One of the first mistakes made by someone looking for their first guitar is that instead of buying something inexpensive, they buy something cheap. There is a HUGE difference between the two.
Cheap and inexpensive can be the same price……it’s just a matter of one being more usable than the other. For this lesson,I will call CHEAP “crap” and inexpensive, something that was built reasonably well using the cheapest parts they could get their hands on.
I am sure most of you have been in a Kmart’s or Target’s and saw a beginners guitar with a name like “ROCK STAR” on the headstock. they sell for about $129.00.This would be CHEAP! (crap)
The problem with these is that it is usually a hard guitar to set up and stay in tune and usually very tough on your fingers while trying to learn chords, not to mention,if you end up hating playing guitar, you’ll end up selling it to someone else for about $40.00.
Now enters MY choice. I recommend going online to Ebay or Craigslist or Gbase.com and looking for a used Danelectro U2 or U3. They run on average between $125.00 -$200.00.
And they set up well and play and sound great. Very inexpensive guitars made to play and sound great. They also resell for about what you paid for them if you aren’t happy as a guitarist.
Danelectros have been played by everyone from Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin to Jimmy Buffet.
I have a Danelectro U3 that I love. It has a finish on it that a friend of mine said looked like a bass boat. It has a silver metal flake paint job with HUGE metal flakes! I nicknamed it the Bimbo because it’s heavily made up and screams alot!
So that is our guitar buyers lesson. Buy a “ROCK STAR” and spend $129 on a future snowboard or canoe paddle,or wisely look into the likes of a Danelectro U2 or U3 for roughly the same money and actually have a musical instrument!
